PROBLEMS AND PROSPECT OF AIR TRANSPORTATION IN NIGERIA (SEMINAR)

Abstract

This seminar work focused on the problem and prospect of Air Transportation in Nigerian. The aim and objective is to give an overview on the concept of air transportation, also to examine the problems and prospect of air transportation in Nigeria and economic and managerial implication of problems in air transportation in Nigeria. However, this paper concluded that in Nigeria, has suffer from poor reputation for operational efficiency and safety. This is attested by the present state of the industry in the country. Recently available statistics and data show an increase in the use of air transportation. The Nigerian air transportation is facing problems which arise as a result of factors militating against efficiency of the system. These factors include absence of a coherent air transport policy, bad management, decaying facilities, loose security, closure of airports, intermittent air crashes etc. This paper therefore recommends that adequate measures should be taken to ensure efficiency of the system for economic growth and development in Nigeria.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

Transportation is an important part of human activity. It forms the basis of all socioeconomic interactions. In many developing countries, lack of transport facilities often hinders economic development. A good transport system is essential to support economic growth and development. Bad roads, inadequate fleets of vehicles, inadequate trains, overcrowded airplanes and congested ports are common features of developing world. Physical problems such as untrained transport managers and planners, capital restructuring and bureaucracies, ineffective traffic regulations exist (Faajir, and Zidan, 2016).

Generally, transportation is the actual physical movement of people and goods from one place to another (Ahukannah et al, 2003). Several means of transportation exist for both man and goods. Modes of transport include air, land (rail and road), water, cable, pipeline and space. These means have evolved through the length of time of man’s existence on the planet. Air transportation is a relatively more recent means of transportation with the invention of air travel in the last century. Prior to this time, man had transported himself and goods on land with the aid of animals, on wheels (aided by animals) and most recently automobile and trains (Suleiman, 2012).

Air transport is an aircraft design for transporting passengers and freight from one location to another in the air using airplanes, jets, rockets helicopters, and drones. Each of these type of air transport has a unique way of achieving speed and the sustainability of it voyage, However there are other types of air transport which may or may not be used for conveying goods, but could be used for recreational purposes, they include, hot air balloons, blimps, gliders, hang gliding, parachuting etc.

Air transportation has become the primary means of common-carrier traveling. Greatest efficiency and value are obtained when long distances are traveled, high-value payloads are moved, immediate needs must be met, or surface terrain prevents easy movement or significantly raises transport costs. Although the time and cost efficiencies obtained decrease as distance traveled is reduced, air transport is often worthwhile even for relatively short distances. Air transportation also provides a communication or medical link, which is sometimes vital, between the different groups of people being served.

1.2 Historical Development of Air Transportation In Nigeria

Air Travel in Nigeria commenced during World War II (1939-1945) when it became necessary to move troops and supplies fast across the country. Several air strips were built then which were converted after the war, to Civilian use (Ileoje, 2003). Nigerian Airways was established in October, 1958 as a Joint Venture between the Nigerian Government, Elder Dempster Lines and the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). The Airways
